The last of the middle-ground.

The last of the middle-ground.

Because it’s halfway between Portland and London, NYC is often where the Girl and I meet for shorter trips. Over the last two years, she and I have both racked up the frequent flier miles. I counted up last year and realized I’d traveled at least once in 9 out of 12 months. For a fat girl with flying issues, this was no small feat!

This trip to NYC was momentous because it marked the last time she and I will meet there before I move. The next time I see her she will be coming to Portland and I will be joining her on her return flight to my new home in London. Two months from now.

The trip was fraught on some levels — far too short for having not seen one another in 2.5 months and full of little moments of my overwhelm burbling out of my head into reality. It was to be expected, of course. I don’t think either one of us were under any illusions that I wouldn’t be a basket case intermittently. As always, she was supremely loving and gently wise. I feel better for having curled up with her and let it all out.

While there were hard bits, the trip was overwhelmingly lovely. Memorable bits were the Girl seeing her first firefly, having dinner with D&A, meeting a rad fatty for famous NY pizza, an impromptu underwear ipod party, daydreaming together about adventures in London, eating cheesecake in bed, realizing we were in NY on Pride Weekend, getting to hear that they’d passed the marriage equality act while we were there, and, last but not least, just talking without needing a laptop and a webcam. In case it’s not painfully obvious, I love this Girl like crazy.

Not sure when we’ll (or I’ll) be back in NY again. As a poor student, all my travel money will be paying for trips back home. Thanks for being such a perfect middle-ground, New York. For all your skittering rats, sewer stink and muggy nights, you are equally full of magic and heart.
